Alice Cooper, born Vincent Damon Furnier on February 4, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, is a prominent American rock singer and songwriter whose career spans over sixty years. He is recognized for his distinctive raspy voice and elaborate stage shows that feature a wide array of props and theatrical illusions. Often referred to as "The Godfather of Shock Rock," Cooper's music and performances are characterized by their macabre themes, drawing influences from horror films, vaudeville, and garage rock.
Originally formed in 1964 in Phoenix, Arizona, the band Alice Cooper featured Furnier alongside guitarists Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. The group released their debut album, "Pretties for You," in 1969, followed by "Easy Action" in 1970; however, these initial releases saw only moderate success. After moving to California and subsequently struggling, the band relocated to Detroit to enhance their stage presence. This effort culminated in their breakthrough album, "Love It to Death" (1971), which included the hit single "Eighteen" and marked the beginning of their ascent in the music industry.
The success of "Love It to Death" allowed Alice Cooper to further enhance their live performances, leading to a series of popular albums, including "Killer" and "School's Out." The latter peaked at number two on the charts in 1972, with its titular track reaching the top ten both in the U.S. and the U.K. Their next album, "Billion Dollar Babies" (1973), became their best-selling release, followed by "Muscle of Love" before the original band disbanded in 1975.
Transitioning to a solo career, Cooper released the concept album "Welcome to My Nightmare" the same year, which featured the hit "Only Women Bleed." Following this, he produced a series of albums, including "Alice Cooper Goes to Hell" (1976) and later releases like "Constrictor" (1986) and "Trash" (1989), which featured "Poison," marking his return to the top ten. Throughout the 1990s, Cooper continued to release albums and explore various musical styles, including hard rock, glam rock, and heavy metal.
In the 2000s, Cooper's discography expanded with albums such as "Brutal Planet" (2001), "The Eyes of Alice Cooper" (2003), and "Dirty Diamonds" (2005). He remains a highly active performer, having participated in major tours, including serving as the opening act for Mötley Crüe's final tour in 2014 and co-headlining a tour with Deep Purple and Edgar Winter in 2017.
Cooper's influence on rock music extends beyond his performances; he is credited with integrating horror imagery into rock and having a significant impact on the genre's theatricality. In addition to his music career, he has ventured into acting, restaurant ownership, and radio hosting since 2004, further solidifying his status as a multifaceted entertainer. Throughout his career, Alice Cooper has sold over 50 million records and continues to be a beloved figure in the music industry.
