Yanni Biography

Born in Greece in 1954, Yiannis Hyrssomallis, better known as Yanni, emerged as a globally recognized composer and pianist with the release of his debut album, Optimystique, in 1984. This was followed by Private Music in 1989, during a time when instrumental music and new-age philosophies were gaining traction. His unique sound, which blends electronic music synthesizers with full orchestras, resonated with audiences and set the stage for his enduring career.

Yanni's breakthrough came with the 1992 album Dare to Dream, which received Grammy nominations, further establishing him in the music industry. The release of In My Time a year later continued this trend of acclaim, enabling Yanni to demonstrate his considerable talent as both a composer and performer. His live performances became a hallmark of his career, notably the groundbreaking Yanni Live at the Acropolis filmed in 1993, which showcased his music against the stunning backdrop of one of Greece's most historic sites and solidified his reputation as a premier live artist.

In 1997, Yanni captivated audiences with performances at the Taj Mahal in India and the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. These remarkable concerts were part of the album Tribute, released later that year. His performances at iconic locations like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico further exemplified his appeal, blending his music with rich cultural settings. Throughout his career, he has performed in more than thirty countries and has sold over twenty-five million albums worldwide, earning numerous platinum and gold certifications.

Following a two-year hiatus, Yanni returned in 2000 with If I Could Tell You, and three years later released Ethnicity, coinciding with his autobiographical work, Yanni in Words. His 2006 album, Yanni Live! The Concert Event, became the fourth best-selling New Age album of that year. In the years that followed, Yanni continued to explore different cultural sounds with albums like Yanni Mexicanismo (2010), Yanni Live in South America (2010), and Truth of Touch (2011).

In 2014, Yanni collaborated with renowned tenor Plácido Domingo on the album Inspirato, which featured operatic renditions of his earlier works. Noteworthy performances during the late 2010s included concerts at the Egyptian pyramids in 2015 and a special performance in 2013 for the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in China, marking a historic collaboration that showcased his international acclaim. Throughout his career, Yanni has maintained a philosophy of unity and cultural fusion, earning the title of a "true global artist."

The 2020s saw Yanni releasing In His Purest Form in August 2020, an album of solo piano performances revisiting his previous works, marking his first solo endeavor since In My Time (1993). Late 2021 also marked Yanni's foray into the digital space with his introduction of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
