The Pointer Sisters, consisting of sisters Ruth, Anita, June, and Bonnie, began their musical journey in West Oakland, California. Encouraged by their Reverend father, they grew up singing gospel music in the church choir. After leaving school, the sisters embarked on a tour together, initially serving as backup singers for various performers. Their big break came while performing with musician Elvin Bishop, which caught the attention of a music industry executive and led to a record deal with Atlantic Records.
Initially struggling to find their footing, the group found success after signing with Blue Thumb Records, where they released their debut album in 1973. Their first single, "Yes We Can Can," came close to breaking into the Top Ten, and soon after, they achieved further recognition with "Wang Dang Doodle." The Pointer Sisters鈥 sophomore album, That鈥檚 A Plenty, produced the hit "Fairytale," a crossover success in the country genre. Notably, this achievement took the sisters to Nashville as the first female black singers to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, earning them a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance in 1975.
Building on their rising popularity, the Pointer Sisters released the album Steppin鈥 in 1975, which included the Grammy-nominated hit "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)." With their next project, Having a Party, in 1977, Bonnie and June left the group to pursue solo careers, although June eventually rejoined in 1978. As a trio, the remaining sisters released the album Energy, featuring a softer rock sound alongside a cover of Bruce Springsteen鈥檚 "Fire."
Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Pointer Sisters achieved tremendous chart success, with notable hits like "He鈥檚 So Shy," "Slow Hand," and "I鈥檓 So Excited," the latter emerging in 1982. Their 1983 album, Break Out, solidified their popularity, yielding several top ten singles, including "Automatic," "Jump (For My Love)," "I鈥檓 So Excited," and "Neutron Dance." These achievements marked the peak of their commercial success in the music industry.
Tragically, June Pointer battled drug addiction for years and left the group in 2004, eventually passing away from cancer in 2006. Following her departure, Ruth's daughter, Issa Pointer, joined the remaining sisters Anita and Ruth as they continued their musical legacy. This new trio enjoyed international success, including a number two hit in Belgium with a cover of "Sisters Are Doin鈥 It for Themselves" in 2005.
From 2009 to 2015, the Pointer Sisters consisted of Anita, Ruth, Issa, and Ruth's granddaughter Sadako Pointer. Although Anita had to retire in 2015 due to health issues, the group has continued to perform, often rotating their lineup as needed. Over the years, the Pointer Sisters have gained recognition for their impact on the music scene, with Billboard ranking them among the most successful dance artists and Hot 100 artists of all time. Through their remarkable career, the Pointer Sisters have left an indelible mark on the musical landscape, celebrating the power of sisterhood through their enduring harmonies and performances.
