Duncan Sheik, born on November 18, 1969, in New Jersey, is a celebrated American singer-songwriter, composer, and actor whose impact spans across various genres of music and theater. Spending his formative years in Montclair, New Jersey, and Hilton Head, South Carolina, Sheik was encouraged by his grandmother to learn piano, a decision that would serve as the foundation for his musical career. After completing his university studies, Sheik moved to California, where he began performing locally, securing work as a studio musician and occasional performer.

Sheik's breakthrough came in the mid-1990s with the release of his self-titled debut album, which featured the hit single "Barely Breathing." This track reached the top of the charts and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, remaining on the charts for over a year.
