Foreigner is a British-American rock band that has left an indelible mark on the music industry since its formation in New York City in 1976. Co-founded by guitarist Mick Jones and vocalist Lou Gramm, alongside drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Ed Gagliardi, and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, the band quickly rose to fame with their signature sound. The name "Foreigner" reflects the international makeup of its members, as Jones, Elliott, and McDonald are British while Gramm, Greenwood, and Gagliardi are American.
Foreigner's self-titled debut album, released in 1977, catapulted them to prominence, peaking at number four on the Billboard charts and producing hits like "Feels Like the First Time" and "Cold as Ice." With each subsequent release, such as their 1978 album Double Vision, which introduced iconic tracks like "Hot Blooded," the band solidified its position in classic rock history. This marked the beginning of a prolific period, with six consecutive albums achieving multi-platinum status, including the legendary Records greatest hits compilation in 1982.
As the band evolved, it faced personnel changes that shaped its sound. By the time they recorded 4 in 1981, Foreigner consisted of a quartet following the departures of McDonald and Greenwood. The album became Foreigner’s breakthrough in the UK and yielded three major hits: "Urgent," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," and "Juke Box Hero." Their 1984 album Agent Provocateur produced their biggest hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is," featuring the memorable collaboration of the New Jersey Mass Choir, propelling the band to new heights of commercial success.
In the late 1980s, Foreigner released Inside Information (1987), which showcased hits like "Say You Will" and "I Don't Want to Live Without You." However, this album marked a turning point as it became their first not to achieve multi-platinum certification in the US. Following a brief hiatus, the band reunited in 2002 for a 25th-anniversary tour, bringing together some of its classic members and introducing new faces, including Kelly Hansen, Jeff Pilson, and Jason Bonham.
Over the years, Foreigner has experienced numerous lineup changes, particularly after Lou Gramm's departure in 2003. Despite these shifts, the band maintained its momentum, releasing the compilation No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner in 2008, which included the new track "Too Late." They continued to tour extensively, often sharing the stage with legendary acts like Styx, Def Leppard, and Journey, proving their resilience in the ever-changing music landscape.
As they celebrated their legacy, Foreigner was recognized for its contributions to rock music with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on October 19, 2024. Today, under the continuing guidance of Mick Jones, Foreigner remains a formidable force in the music world, captivating audiences with classic hits and carrying forward a storied legacy that spans nearly five decades. With an enduring fan base and occasional lineup reunions, Foreigner continues to define and redefine what it means to be a classic rock band.
