Shirley Murdock Biography

Shirley Murdock, born in 1957, is an accomplished R&B singer hailing from Toledo, Ohio. Growing up immersed in gospel music, she began her journey in the music industry by singing with her local church choir. Murdock's vocal talent caught the attention of Roger Troutman, who hired her as a backup singer for his family band, Zapp. This opportunity allowed her to collaborate with Troutman more closely, and together they recorded their first charted single, ??irl, Cut It Out,? which reached number 79 on the R&B charts in early 1985.

In 1985, Murdock signed with Elektra Records, which led to significant success with her debut single "No More," co-written by Murdock and Gregory Jackson. The single climbed to number 24 on the R&B charts, paving the way for her signature hit, "As We Lay." Written by Larry Troutman and Billy Beck, this poignant ballad not only made it into the R&B Top Ten but also peaked at number 23 on the pop charts and number 21 on the adult contemporary chart by early 1987. Her eponymous debut album, Shirley Murdock!, released in 1986, was certified gold and featured additional hits like "Go on Without You" and "Be Free."

Following her successful debut, Murdock continued to release music throughout the years, including albums such as A Woman?? Point of View (1988) and Let There Be Love! (1991). In 2002, she made her gospel music debut with the album Home, released on T.D. Jakes' Dexterity Sounds label. Murdock?? talent also extends to acting, with her film debut in Sweating in the Spirit. In 2009, she took part in the stage play A Mother's Prayer, performing alongside notable figures like Johnny Gill, Robin Givens, and Jermaine Crawford. That same year, she collaborated with Teena Marie on the song "Soldier," featured on Marie?? album Congo Square, further solidifying her presence in the music industry.
