Jackson Browne, an influential figure in rock music, established himself with a steady fan base and critical acclaim from his first four albums. His 1976 album The Pretender marked a turning point, crafting a sound that became emblematic of the Californian music scene of the 1970s. Browne had first garnered attention with his self-titled debut album in 1972, which featured "Doctor My Eyes," Browne's first Top Ten hit, and the co-written Eagles classic "Take It Easy."

Following his debut, Browne continued to produce a string of successful albums throughout the 1970s, including For Everyman (1973), Late for the Sky (1974), and the iconic Running on Empty (1977).
