Herb Alpert Biography

Herb Alpert, born in 1935 in Los Angeles, California, grew up in a family of talented musicians who inspired his love for music from an early age. His parents, both immigrants from Romania, played the mandolin and violin, which surrounded Herb with a rich musical environment. He began his formal music education at the age of eight when he started taking trumpet lessons. This foundation in music continued through high school and into his years of service in the U.S. Army, where he remained active in performing. Upon returning to civilian life, he signed with RCA Records and released his debut single, “Tell it to the Birds,” while simultaneously partnering with Jerry Moss to establish A&M Records—an influential label that would shape the music industry for decades.

During the 1960s, Herb Alpert skyrocketed to fame, particularly with his backing band, the Tijuana Brass. The group produced a staggering array of hit songs, including classics such as "The Lonely Bull," "Spanish Flea," "A Taste of Honey," and the iconic "Ob La Di Ob La Da."
