Corinne Jacqueline Bailey Rae, born on February 26, 1979, in West Yorkshire, England, is a British singer-songwriter known for her soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics. Raised in the Leeds area, Corinne displayed an early affinity for music, learning classical violin as a child and participating in school and church choirs. Her passion for the arts flourished while studying English Literature at the University of Leeds, where she met her husband, musician Jason Rae. His encouragement propelled her to pursue a career in music, leading to her eventual rise as a solo artist.
Rae's solo career took flight in 2006 with the release of her self-titled debut album, which soared to the top of the UK charts and reached the top five in the U.S. The album was a commercial success, selling over four million copies internationally and featuring hit singles such as “Like a Star,” “Put Your Records On,” and “Trouble Sleeping.” Her work earned her multiple Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Record/Song of the Year for “Put Your Records On,” solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the music industry.
In 2010, Corinne Bailey Rae released her second album, The Sea, after a three-year hiatus. The album not only debuted in the top ten internationally but also spawned the Grammy-nominated single “Is This Love.” Rae's ability to blend genres and evoke deep emotion through her music was recognized with numerous nominations, including multiple BET Awards and BRIT Awards, as well as winning MOJO Awards for Best UK Female and Best Newcomer.
In addition to her solo work, Rae has collaborated with various artists, featuring on singles like “Your Love Is Mine” with The New Mastersounds and “Young & Foolish” with The stiX. In 2008, she won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year for her contribution as a featured artist on Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters, highlighting her versatility as a performer.
Following a period of personal tragedy with the loss of her husband Jason Rae, who passed away in 2008 from an accidental overdose, Corinne channeled her grief into her music. This emotional depth is evident in her subsequent albums, culminating in her third release, The Heart Speaks in Whispers, which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's R&B chart in May 2016.
In 2023, Rae continued to evolve as an artist with the release of Black Rainbows, her first album in seven years. Inspired by her experiences with the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago, the album delves into themes of Black art and culture, reflecting her journey as both an artist and an individual. Corinne Bailey Rae’s evolution from a promising young artist to a celebrated musician serves as a testament to her resilience and talent, making her one of the defining voices of her generation.
