Julio Iglesias, born Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva on September 23, 1943, is a renowned Spanish singer, songwriter, and former professional footballer. With his romantic voice and smooth delivery, he has become one of the world’s most popular Latin singers, making a lasting impact far beyond the 1970s when he first burst onto the music scene. Interestingly, Iglesias initially pursued a career in law, attending college with aspirations to become a lawyer. However, a serious car accident in the 1960s led to an extended period of recuperation, during which he discovered his passion for music, picking up the guitar and ultimately realizing his true calling.
Despite completing his studies and earning a degree from Cambridge, Iglesias became increasingly focused on his burgeoning music career by the late 1960s. By this time, he was gaining recognition as a singer, collecting accolades and securing a recording contract. His Latin American fan base began to grow, but his international potential did not go unnoticed by American labels. Signing with CBS International enabled him to record in multiple languages, allowing him to reach a broader audience. By the late 1970s, he turned his attention towards English-language recordings, finding further success on the global stage.
Iglesias scored his first major hit with "Begin the Beguine," which reached number one in 1981. His album 1100 Bel Air Place, released in 1984, marked his major crossover into the English-speaking market, featuring well-known duets such as "To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before" with Willie Nelson and "All of You" with Diana Ross. The 1980s became a pinnacle decade for Iglesias, highlighted by his duet with Stevie Wonder, "My Love." As the 1990s rolled in, he began to refocus on Spanish recordings, with successful albums like Tango (1996), La Carretera (1995), and Raices (1989)—the latter of which earned him a Grammy nomination.
Entering the new millennium, Iglesias released Divorcio, which became a monumental success, topping charts in multiple countries and selling over 350,000 copies in Spain alone. This success was quickly followed by a European and American tour, which included stops in Africa and Asia, reaffirming his global appeal. In 2006, he released Romantic Classics, his highest-charting English-language album, which dominated the charts in Canada, the US, and Europe, and was followed by several subsequent albums, including Quelque chose de France (2007), 1 (2011), and Mexico (2015).
Over the course of his illustrious career, Julio Iglesias has sold over 300 million records worldwide and holds more than 2,500 gold and platinum records. He ranks among the best-selling music artists in history, recognized for his extensive catalog of eighty albums. In 1983, he gained the distinction of having recorded songs in the most languages worldwide, and he was later credited in 2013 as the best-selling male Latin artist of all time. His appeal spans across five continents, having performed in over 5,000 concerts for more than 60 million fans globally.
In recognition of his contributions to music, Iglesias has received numerous awards, including Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, World Music Awards, and American Music Awards, among others. He has also been honored with prestigious distinctions like the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts of Spain and the Legion of Honour of France. In 1989, UNICEF appointed him as Special Ambassador for the Performing Arts, highlighting his commitment to humanitarian efforts.
Iglesias's influence extends to his home country of Spain, where he stands as the most successful foreign record seller, having sold 23 million records. Internationally, he has made a significant imprint in countries such as Brazil, France, and Italy, solidifying his status as one of the most commercially successful Spanish artists in history. In April 2013, he was inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, capping off a career defined by remarkable achievements and lasting legacy.
Julio Iglesias continues to enchant audiences worldwide with his music and dedication to his craft. His most recent albums, Mexico y Amigos and Dios Coracoes, released in 2017, further showcase his unmatched talent and enduring appeal, ensuring that Julio Iglesias remains a cherished figure in the realm of music for generations to come.
