Diana Ross, born on March 26, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, is an iconic American singer and actress celebrated for her extraordinary contributions to music and film. Raised in a family that appreciated the arts, Ross began her musical journey as a teenager, forming a vocal group with friends Florence Ballard, Barbara Martin, and Mary Wilson. This group eventually transformed into The Supremes, which became one of the most successful girl groups in history, solidifying Ross’s status as the "Queen of Motown Records."
The Supremes signed with Motown Records in 1961, under the watchful eye of the label's founder, Berry Gordy, Jr. They quickly rose to fame, scoring their first number one hit with "Where Did Our Love Go?" in 1964. Over the next few years, the group achieved an astounding twelve number one hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, including timeless classics like "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "Someday We Will Be Together." The Supremes remain the best-charting female group in history, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
In 1970, following her departure from The Supremes, Diana Ross launched a successful solo career that would see her release 26 studio albums, including celebrated works such as Diana Ross (1976) and Diana (1980). She quickly topped the charts with hits like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Upside Down," establishing herself as a commanding force in music. Ross’s crossover into acting began with her groundbreaking portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Sings the Blues (1972), earning her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award, while the film's soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard 200.
Throughout the late 1970s and beyond, Ross further showcased her talents in films like The Wiz (1978) and Mahogany (1975). She continued to release successful albums, featuring hit singles such as "Love Hangover" and "Endless Love," while her influence and popularity grew through the 1980s and 1990s with enduring tracks like "I'm Coming Out" and "Chain Reaction." Her ability to reinvent herself while staying true to her roots has been a hallmark of her career.
The new millennium has been equally fruitful for Ross. In 2006, she released Blue, an album of jazz standards, and received numerous accolades, including the BET Lifetime Achievement Award and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007. Notably, in 2012, Ross was presented with her first Grammy—a Lifetime Achievement Award—recognizing her extraordinary contributions to the music industry. Two years later, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, joining a prestigious list of honorees.
Today, Diana Ross continues to captivate audiences around the world, with her tours cementing her reputation as one of the most successful dance artists of all time. The In the Name of Love Tour began in 2013 and extended into 2017, while her Vegas residency, Endless Memories, commenced in the same year. As of 2023, Ross is actively celebrating her legacy, launching The Music Legacy Tour and performing at iconic venues, including London's Royal Albert Hall. With over 100 million records sold worldwide and a multitude of awards, including multiple Grammy wins and a Tony Award, Ross remains an enduring symbol of musical excellence and creative artistry.
