Annie Lennox, a Scottish singer-songwriter, political activist, and philanthropist, rose to international fame in the 1980s as one half of the iconic synth-pop duo Eurythmics, alongside Dave Stewart. Her powerful alto voice and androgynous image, particularly in the music video for "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," captivated audiences worldwide. The duo's string of hits, including "Love Is a Stranger," "Here Comes the Rain Again," and "Who's That Girl," solidified their place in music history.
After Eurythmics dissolved in 1991, Lennox embarked on a highly successful solo career, starting with her debut album Diva in 1992. This album showcased her sophisticated vocal talents and more calm style, with outstanding potential for adult contemporary crossover. Singles like "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass" further propelled the album's success, earning her three Grammy Awards and selling over two million copies in the United States. She continued her success with Medusa (1995), a collection of cover songs that included hits like "No More 'I Love You's'", solidifying her status as a prominent solo artist.
Throughout her career, Lennox has released six solo studio albums, continuing to explore various musical styles. Her solo work also includes contributions to film soundtracks, most notably "Into the West," written for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which earned her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy Award. Her vocal range is contralto. She has been named "The Greatest White Soul Singer Alive" by VH1 and one of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone. Lennox has earned eight Brit Awards, including being named Best British Female Artist a record six times.
Beyond her musical achievements, Lennox is a dedicated political and social activist, particularly in raising awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS causes, focusing on women and children in Africa. She founded the Sing campaign in 2007, a project featuring collaborations with other prominent female artists to raise awareness and funds, and The Circle, a women's empowerment charity, in 2008. Her charitable endeavors have been widely recognized, including an OBE in 2011 and multiple other awards for her philanthropic work.
In 2012, Lennox performed "Little Bird" at the Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London, showcasing her continued presence in the public eye. She released the album Nostalgia in 2014, a collection of jazz, soul and blues songs, earning her another Grammy Award nomination, for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Most recently, in 2019, she released Lepidoptera, an EP featuring extemporized piano songs, a companion piece to an art installation.
Lennox's career has been marked by both critical acclaim and commercial success. Additionally, she has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Eurythmics.
