Ingrid Michaelson, born in 1979 in New York, grew up in a creatively rich environment, nurtured by her mother, a sculptor, and her father, a composer. This artistic backdrop inspired her musical journey, leading her to take up the piano in elementary school. Throughout her youth, Ingrid immersed herself in the world of music, studying performance and composition at prestigious music schools in Manhattan, while also engaging in theater through various repertory companies. Initially torn between a potential career in acting or music, she ultimately decided to forge her path as a singer-songwriter by the mid-2000s.

Michaelson made her independent debut in 2005 with the album Slow the Rain, which garnered her some early recognition. However, it was her sophomore effort, Girls and Boys, that truly propelled her into the spotlight. The turning point came when one of her songs was featured in the immensely popular television series Grey’s Anatomy, generating significant buzz around her music. This attention led to a signing with Original Signal Recordings, allowing her to re-release Girls and Boys with enhanced marketing support, further boosting her visibility.

Since then, Ingrid has released an impressive array of albums, including Be OK (2008), Everybody (2009), Human Again (2012), and Lights Out (2014). Her music features a collection of hit singles such as “The Way I Am,” “Be OK,” “Everybody,” and “Girls Chase Boys.” One standout collaboration was “Winter Song,” a duet with Sara Bareilles that significantly expanded her acclaim and exemplified her ability to connect emotionally through her music.

In January 2019, she announced her venture into theater by writing the music and lyrics for the adaptation of The Notebook. The musical premiered at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2022 and eventually made its way to Broadway, opening at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 14, 2024. The song “Carry Me Home” from the musical received the Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for Favorite New Song, and the production garnered three nominations at the 77th Tony Awards.

In 2022, Ingrid expanded her musical collaborations by featuring on Ariza's song "The Sky and Me" and joined forces with A Great Big World for the holiday track "It's Almost Christmas." Her versatility as an artist continues to shine through various mediums, including her guest appearance on Netflix’s Girls5eva, where she portrayed a folk singer-songwriter.

Most recently, Michaelson has been preparing to release her new album, For the Dreamers, with a series of singles including “Love Is” featuring Jason Mraz, a cover of “What a Wonderful World,” and “It Never Ends.” The full album is set to make its debut on August 23, 2024, further showcasing her continued evolution as an artist and her unwavering dedication to her craft.
