5th Dimension 001 fhd Biography

The Fifth Dimension began in 1965 as the Versatiles. Ron Townson, Billy Davis Jr., and Lamonte McLemore had all grown up in St. Louis but met after each had moved independently to Los Angeles. Their diverse areas of training (gospel/R&B, opera, and jazz) helped them to create their unique adult-oriented pop sound, with its mix of elegant soul and flower-power vibe.

When former beauty queens Florence LaRue and Marilyn McCoo joined the group, they caught the attention of Johnny Rivers, who signed the Versatiles and convinced them to change their name to the Fifth Dimension. Their 1966 cover of “Go Where You Wanna Go” brought them into the Top 20, and in the following year “Up, Up and Away” became their breakthrough hit.

The single swept the Grammies, taking home five awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, and quickly pushed the album into gold status. In 1969, the Fifth Dimension’s “"Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" was their next hit, and it went on to become not only a decade-defining single, but also exceeded sales of three million, remained at number one on the charts for six weeks, and earned the Fifth Dimension another Grammy for Record of the Year.

The Fifth Dimension disappeared from the spotlight for a while, but returned in 1995 with the album In the House. Shortly thereafter, Willie Williams replaced Townson, who passed away in 2001. Battle left in 2002, to be replaced by Van Jewel.?? That same year, the Fifth Dimension was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

The Fifth Dimension launched a tour in 2009, and in 2011, McCoo and Davis were featured on the Cliff Richard album Soulicious and appeared live on stage as part of the same tour, performing with Sir Cliff and reprising many of their previous hits.

The Fifth Dimension continues to tour and perform.
