He left high school before graduation but developed a strong interest in acting, leading him to enroll at the Herbert Berghof Studio for formal training.
In 1967, Pacino relocated to Boston to work at the Charles Playhouse, where he gained valuable stage experience. His Broadway debut came in 1969 with the play Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, which earned him his first Tony Award. That same year, he made his film debut in the independent film Me, Natalie. His emerging talent attracted the attention of filmmakers, positioning him for significant roles in the years to come.
Pacino's major breakthrough occurred with his casting as Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972), a role that earned him critical acclaim and his first Academy Award nomination. This performance established him as a leading actor in Hollywood, leading to a prolific career characterized by a wide range of acclaimed roles. Throughout his career, he has appeared in numerous significant films, including Serpico (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Scarface (1983), further solidifying his status as a key figure in contemporary cinema.
His performance in Scent of a Woman (1992) secured him an Academy Award for Best Actor, and he garnered additional nominations for films like The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), and The Irishman (2019). Pacino is recognized for his versatility, having portrayed a diverse array of characters across genres, from crime dramas to historical narratives.
In addition to his film work, Pacino has maintained a strong presence in theater, with notable roles in productions such as The Merchant of Venice (2010) and Glengarry Glen Ross (2012). He starred in China Doll (2015-2016), a play written specifically for him by David Mamet. His contributions to theater reflect his commitment to the performing arts and his ability to engage with live audiences.
Pacino has also made significant contributions to television, winning Primetime Emmy Awards for his performances in HBO productions like Angels in America (2003) and You Don't Know Jack (2010). He has appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series Hunters (2020–2023) and directed projects such as Looking for Richard (1996) and Chinese Coffee (2000).
