Anita Baker, born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1958, grew up in Detroit, where she was heavily influenced by renowned singers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson. Her musical journey began at an early age, as she joined a gospel choir by the age of twelve and started performing with local bands by sixteen. In 1975, Baker's career took a significant turn when she auditioned for the popular Detroit-based group Chapter 8, ultimately joining the ensemble.
In 1983, Baker seized an opportunity to record her debut album, The Songstress, under Beverly Glen Records. This release garnered her critical attention, leading to a major-label deal with Elektra Records in 1985. Her first album under this label, Rapture, was released in 1986 and achieved substantial commercial success, earning multiple Grammy Awards and achieving platinum certification. Hits from this album, such as "Sweet Love" and "Caught Up in the Rapture," helped establish Baker's name in the music industry.
Baker's subsequent album, Compositions (1990), further showcased her talent, featuring a stronger jazz influence than her earlier works. This release was met with critical acclaim and continued her successful trajectory within the adult contemporary and R&B genres. Throughout the 1990s, Baker maintained her popularity, characterized by her ability to blend jazz, gospel, pop, and R&B in a manner that resonated with diverse audiences.
After a lengthy hiatus, Baker made her return to the music scene in 2003 with the album My Everything, which debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and hit number one on the R&B charts. The album was certified gold, and her follow-up project, Christmas Fantasy (2005), earned her another Grammy nomination for the song "Christmas Time Is Here." In 2005, Baker received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music, further validating her contributions to the arts.
In recent years, Baker has continued to work on new projects, including her 2012 single "Lately," a remake of Tyrese's hit, which generated significant airplay on urban adult contemporary radio. Despite delays in releasing a full album, she made notable appearances on television, including performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the Grammys, where "Lately" was nominated for a Grammy Award.
In January 2017, Baker announced her retirement from music, though she emerged from retirement in 2018. In 2021, she faced a dispute with Elektra Records over her master recordings, which she asserted were supposed to revert back to her after the contract's expiration. The conflict was resolved in September 2021, with Baker regaining ownership of her masters. Baker's continued influence in the music industry was recognized in 2023 when Rolling Stone ranked her number 92 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
