Christopher Cross, born Christopher Charles Geppert on May 3, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his smooth blend of rock and pop. Growing up primarily in the Washington, D.C. area due to his father's career as a U.S. Army doctor, Cross's musical journey began in his teenage years. He first gained experience performing with local bands and eventually formed his own group, Christopher Cross, with friends in San Antonio before moving to Austin to pursue music full-time.

Cross achieved remarkable success with his self-titled debut album, released on December 20, 1979. The album was an immediate commercial and critical triumph, producing hit singles such as "Ride Like the Wind," "Sailing," "Say You'll Be Mine," and "Never Be the Same." His breakout hit "Sailing" reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy Awards in 1980, while the album itself garnered five Grammys, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year.
