Christopher Cross, born Christopher Charles Geppert on May 3, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his smooth blend of rock and pop. Growing up primarily in the Washington, D.C. area due to his father's career as a U.S. Army doctor, Cross's musical journey began in his teenage years. He first gained experience performing with local bands and eventually formed his own group, Christopher Cross, with friends in San Antonio before moving to Austin to pursue music full-time.
Cross achieved remarkable success with his self-titled debut album, released on December 20, 1979. The album was an immediate commercial and critical triumph, producing hit singles such as "Ride Like the Wind," "Sailing," "Say You'll Be Mine," and "Never Be the Same." His breakout hit "Sailing" reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy Awards in 1980, while the album itself garnered five Grammys, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. This distinguished recognition made him the first artist in Grammy history to sweep all four general field awards in a single ceremony, a feat not repeated until 2020.
Christopher Cross continued to build on his early success with subsequent albums, including Another Page (1983), Every Turn of the World (1985), and Back of My Mind (1988). His most notable song from this period, "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)," co-written with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen, became the Oscar-winning theme for the film Arthur in 1981 and also topped the Billboard charts. His other classics such as "All Right" and "Think of Laura" further entrenched his reputation as a prominent musician of the era.
Though Cross enjoyed significant popularity in the late 1970s and early 1980s, his commercial traction waned with the rise of MTV and a shift in musical tastes that favored visually-driven pop. His albums released in the mid-1980s, including Every Turn of the World and Back of My Mind, failed to achieve the same level of success as his earlier work, resulting in a decline in mainstream recognition.
In the 1990s, Cross produced several albums, such as Rendezvous (1992) and Walking in Avalon (1998), which received critical acclaim but did not regain the mass audience of his earlier years. He continued to perform and tour, opening for various acts and maintaining a dedicated fanbase. The decade saw him place songs in popular television series, including "Swept Away" featured on Growing Pains.
Cross made a comeback in the 2000s with projects like the Very Best of... compilation and the Christmas album A Christopher Cross Christmas in 2007. He continued to release new music, including the studio album Doctor Faith in 2011, and a live album, A Night in Paris, in 2013, recorded at the Theatre Le Trianon in Paris. He remained active in touring and collaborating with other artists, demonstrating his enduring appeal.
As he approached his 40th anniversary in music, Cross continued to perform live and connect with fans. His music remains influential, and he has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity through various tributes and performances in recent years. Cross's blend of heartfelt songwriting, captivating melodies, and a signature vocal style has solidified his legacy as one of the iconic voices of his generation.
