Three Mo’ Tenors, a groundbreaking vocal trio, was established in 2000 by founding members Rodrick Dixon, Thomas Young, and Victor Trent Cook, who sought to redefine the boundaries of classical music through a fusion of opera, jazz, classical, and gospel. The group emerged as a dynamic crossover act, challenging stereotypes and showcasing the versatility of African American tenors who excel in diverse musical genres while maintaining the integrity of each style.
The concept for Three Mo’ Tenors was the brainchild of Marion J. Caffey, a distinguished Broadway performer, writer, and director. While inspired by the renowned Three Tenors—Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras—who ventured beyond their operatic roots in the 1994 PBS special, Caffey envisioned a similar ensemble featuring African American tenors. He recognized a wealth of talent within this community and set out to introduce the world to a new generation of versatile vocalists.
Caffey’s vision took form in 2001 when the trio debuted in a theatrically staged concert that was televised by PBS’s Great Performances. Their self-titled album was released by RCA, marking the beginning of a musical journey that would see the Three Mo’ Tenors performing internationally. In just a year, they gained widespread recognition, booking performances across the nation and establishing themselves as a prominent act.
The tenors of Three Mo’ Tenors have developed a remarkable repertoire, akin to Olympic decathlon athletes, showcasing their extensive musical range. Their concerts encompass an astonishing array of styles, including classical opera, jazz, gospel, soul, spirituals, pop, Broadway, rock, and blues—spanning over four centuries of music in a single captivating evening. This breadth of talent allows them to connect with diverse audiences while celebrating the rich history of vocal music.
Since their inception, Three Mo’ Tenors has introduced over 11 talented classically trained yet versatile tenors to the global stage, performing in venues across the United States and abroad, including the United Kingdom, Russia, Armenia, Paraguay, and Canada. Their performances have graced renowned platforms, from Broadway to the Metropolitan Opera, as well as major universities and cultural institutions worldwide.
Three Mo’ Tenors transcends just a musical group; it represents a celebration of the history and future of exceptional Black tenors, highlighting their stories and artistry. As long as undiscovered tenors remain waiting in the wings, Three Mo’ Tenors will advocate for their voices, ensuring they are heard and appreciated by audiences everywhere. Today, the trio continues to perform and record, delighting sold-out audiences globally and solidifying their legacy as a transformative force in the world of music.
