Adam Mitchel Lambert, born on January 29, 1982, in Indianapolis, Indiana, is an American singer, songwriter, and actor renowned for his dynamic vocal performances that blend theatrical training with modern and classic music genres. Lambert spent his formative years in San Diego, California, where he began participating in local children's theater productions from an early age. By his teenage years, he was seriously studying theater and performing in various local productions, including notable plays such as "Peter Pan," "Camelot," and "The Music Man," at venues like The Lyceum.
After graduating from high school, Lambert moved to Los Angeles, where he launched his professional career performing on a cruise ship. He later toured Europe in a version of the Broadway musical "Hair." His major breakthrough came when he was cast in "The Ten Commandments: The Musical," playing the role of Joshua alongside Val Kilmer. His commendable performance garnered positive reviews, particularly highlighting his vocal talent. This success encouraged Lambert to form his own underground rock band while pursuing work as a session musician and demo singer.
Lambert's rise to fame accelerated in 2009 when he auditioned for the eighth season of "American Idol," finishing as the runner-up. This exposure catapulted him into the public eye and led to his signing with RCA Records. His debut album, "For Your Entertainment," was released in late 2009, reaching number three on the U.S. Billboard 200 and producing hit singles such as "Whataya Want from Me," which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
In 2012, Lambert released his second studio album, "Trespassing," which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, making him the first openly gay artist to achieve this milestone. His third album, "The Original High," was released in 2015 and included the successful single " Ghost Town." Over his career, Lambert has sold over 3 million albums and 5 million singles worldwide, securing his status as a prominent figure in the music industry.
In addition to his solo career, Lambert has been closely associated with the iconic band Queen since 2012, performing in numerous successful tours worldwide. Their collaborative album, "Live Around the World," was released in October 2020 and debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, further solidifying Lambert's role as a key member of the band.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Lambert is also recognized for his advocacy work within the LGBTQ+ community. In late 2019, he founded the non-profit Feel Something Foundation, emphasizing support for organizations that impact the LGBTQ+ community in areas such as education, mental health, and homelessness. His contributions have earned him accolades and recognition for his activism.
In 2024, Lambert made his Broadway debut by replacing Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee in the revival of "Cabaret." This transition to theater highlights his versatility as a performer and his continued commitment to expanding his artistic horizons.
