Clayton Holmes Aiken (née Grissom; born November 30, 1978) is an American singer, television personality, actor, and political activist renowned for his remarkable journey in the entertainment industry. Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Aiken showcased his singing talent early, participating in local church and school choirs, as well as theater productions. His mother’s encouragement played a pivotal role in his musical development, as she gifted him studio time to record three demo albums before his life-changing appearance on American Idol.
Aiken catapulted to fame in 2003 with his stunning rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" on American Idol, ultimately finishing as the season's runner-up. His exceptional talent led to a record deal with RCA even before the show's conclusion, and his debut single, “This Is the Night,” was released to great acclaim, quickly ascending to number one on the charts. His debut studio album, Measure of a Man, followed in October 2003, selling over half a million copies within its first week, paving the way for a successful music career.
Over the years, Aiken has released several additional albums, including Merry Christmas with Love (2004), A Thousand Different Ways (2006), On My Way Here (2008), Tried and True (2010), and Steadfast (2012), all contributing to his status as one of the top-selling American Idol alumni, with over five million albums sold. His touring schedule has been extensive, featuring eleven tours and numerous television specials, including A Clay Aiken Christmas and Tried & True Live! for PBS. Aiken also made his Broadway debut in 2008 in the musical Spamalot, adding theater to his impressive repertoire.
In addition to his music career, Aiken has become widely recognized for his philanthropic work. He co-founded the Bubel/Aiken Foundation in 2003, which later evolved into the National Inclusion Project, advocating for children with disabilities. His role as a UNICEF ambassador from 2004 to 2013 allowed him to travel extensively while promoting children's rights and welfare worldwide. Aiken also served on the Presidential Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, highlighting his commitment to advocacy.
In 2014, Aiken ventured into politics, running for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district. Initially met with skepticism as a novelty candidate, he nonetheless won the Democratic primary but narrowly lost to the Republican incumbent in the general election. His passion for social issues and public service remains evident in his endeavors.
He has also made a mark in television. He has appeared in guest roles on popular series like 30 Rock, Scrubs, and Drop Dead Diva and participated in the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice, where he finished as the runner-up to Arsenio Hall.
