Sheila E. Biography

Sheila Cecilia Escovedo, known professionally as Sheila E., was born on December 12, 1957, in Oakland, California. Regarded as one of the greatest musicians of her generation, she is celebrated for her exceptional skills as a multi-instrumentalist, particularly her prowess in drums and percussion. Nicknamed the "Queen of Percussion," Sheila E. has made significant contributions to various musical styles, including R&B, funk, pop, synth-pop, Latin pop, and tropical music. She began her music career in 1976 as a percussionist with the George Duke Band before branching out to establish herself as a solo artist.

Sheila E. gained mainstream recognition in the 1980s after collaborating with Prince, who played a crucial role in her career development. Her debut album, The Glamorous Life, was released in 1984 on Warner Bros. Records, featuring the hit single "The Glamorous Life," which became an international top-ten success. This album garnered her four Grammy Award nominations, including one for Best New Artist, and established her as a formidable force in the music industry. Following the success of her debut, her second album, Romance 1600 (1985), produced the hit "A Love Bizarre," further solidifying her status in the music scene.

Throughout her career, Sheila E. has released several more albums, including Sheila E. (1987) and Sex Cymbal (1991), which continued to showcase her talent.
