Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in the mid-1990s in Baltimore, Maryland. The founding members include David Portner (Avey Tare), Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), Brian Weitz (Geologist), and Josh Dibb (Deakin). The musicians met during high school and began collaborating on music shortly thereafter, displaying an early commitment to creative experimentation.
The group established their record label, Paw Tracks, in 1999, which served as a platform for their debut album, Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished, released in 2000. Over the next several years, Animal Collective released a series of non-charting albums, including Danse Manatee (2001), Campfire Songs (2003), Here Comes the Indian (2003), Sung Tongs (2004), and Feels (2005). During this period, the band began to cultivate a distinctive sound characterized by elements of psychedelia, freak folk, noise, and electronica.
In 2007, Animal Collective achieved significant commercial success with the album Strawberry Jam, which marked their first entry into the Billboard 200 chart, peaking in the top forty. The album featured the popular single “Peacebone,” which topped the dance charts. This breakthrough laid the foundation for the band's growing influence in the independent music scene.
Following Strawberry Jam, Animal Collective continued to release critically acclaimed albums that garnered chart success. Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) reached #13 on the US charts and was noted for its innovative sound, which had a lasting impact on the direction of independent music in the following decade. Other notable releases include Centipede Hz (2012) and Painting With (2016), as well as a series of EPs such as People (2006), Water Curses (2008), and Monkey Been to Burn Town (2013).
The band's artistic output is known for its collaborative nature, with contributions from all four members across various projects. Prior collaborations among the band members, particularly between Lennox and Portner, were retroactively classified under the Animal Collective's discography, further illustrating their integrated approach to music-making.
As of 2017, Animal Collective released their latest EP, Meeting of the Waters, which was documented in a series called “Earthworks” produced by Viceland. The band remains an influential force in the experimental pop genre, continuing to evolve and adapt their sound while maintaining a dedicated following in the music community. With their emphasis on innovation and exploration, Animal Collective is seen as a band to watch in the coming years.
