Asher Roth, born on August 11, 1985, in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, is an American rapper who gained mainstream recognition in 2009 with his debut single, "I Love College." Growing up in a predominantly white suburban community, he began rapping as a teenager and cultivated a fan base while studying at West Chester University, leveraging social media platforms like MySpace and Facebook to expand his reach. His early work includes the 2006 mixtape "Believe the Hype", which attracted the attention of industry figures Scooter Braun and Steve Rifkind, leading to a major-label recording contract with Universal Music Group.
In 2008, Roth began to establish himself in the underground rap scene with "The Greenhouse Effect Mixtape". This project was hosted by notable figures Don Cannon and DJ Drama and was released as a free download on The Daily Kush, a multimedia blog dedicated to promoting his music. The following year, Roth released "I Love College," which became a commercial hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success was accompanied by the follow-up single, "Lark on My Go Kart," and the release of his debut album, "Asleep in the Bread Aisle" (2009). Despite mixed reviews, the album's production by newcomer Oren Yoel led to considerable attention and comparisons to Eminem, which Roth addressed in the track "As I Em."
In 2008, Roth also signed with SRC Records and Braun's label, Schoolboy Records. On June 5, 2013, he announced a reunion with DJ Drama and Don Cannon for the sequel to his well-received mixtape, "The Greenhouse Effect Vol. 2", which was released on June 25, 2013. Later that year, he revealed the title of his often-delayed second studio album, "RetroHash", which was released on April 22, 2014. Upon its debut, "RetroHash" entered the US Billboard 200 chart at number 45, with first-week sales of approximately 6,100 copies.
In 2016, Roth returned to Pennsylvania after several years living in Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles. He reconnected with musician Rob Deckhart, and together they began working on a new project. This collaboration culminated in the album "Flowers on the Weekend", which was released in April 2020. Roth also announced plans for multiple future releases, including a collaborative EP titled "Rawther" with Nottz Raw and Travis Barker, and a project with producer Pete Rock tentatively titled "Pete Roth".
While "Asleep in the Bread Aisle" marked Roth's only major label release, he transitioned to the independent label Federal Prism for "RetroHash", which achieved moderate success. His later album, "Flowers on the Weekend", received widespread criticism but reflects his continued presence in the music industry. Throughout his career, Roth has maintained a focus on crafting his unique sound and navigating the complexities of the evolving music landscape.
Roth's journey highlights the challenges and successes that can accompany an artist's rise in the competitive world of hip-hop, showcasing his adaptability and dedication to his craft over the years.
