Bobby Brown was born on February 5, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in the working-class area of Roxbury. He began his music career at a young age, joining the group New Edition in 1978 at the age of nine. The group, which also included Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe, was formed by the members themselves and quickly gained popularity.

New Edition released their debut album, "Candy Girl," in 1982, which was a commercial success and launched the group to stardom. Brown was a key member of the group, contributing to hits like "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "Mr. Telephone Man." He remained with the group until 1985, when he left to pursue a solo career.
