The Mavericks, an American band formed in the late 1980s in Miami, Florida, consists of members Paul Deakin, Robert Reynolds, Ben Peeler, and Raul Malo. Known for their eclectic blend of rockabilly, Latin, and country music, the group first emerged on the music scene in the early 1990s with their self-titled debut album, which, while not commercially successful, led to a recording contract with MCA Records.
Following their signing, The Mavericks released the album From Hell to Paradise, which gained some traction, producing the charting single “Hey Good Looking.” However, it was their third album, What a Crying Shame, that marked a significant breakthrough for the band. It reached the top ten on the U.S. country music charts and made its way to the fifty-fourth position on mainstream charts, yielding popular singles such as “What a Crying Shame,” “O What a Thrill,” and “There Goes My Heart.”
In 1995, The Mavericks continued their ascent with Music for All Occasions, which matched the chart success of their previous album while securing them a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the single “Here Comes the Rain.” This album also produced additional hits, including “I Should Have Been True,” “All That Heaven Will Allow,” and “Blue Moon,” solidifying their presence in the country music landscape.
The band released the albums Trampoline in 1998 and a self-titled album in 2003, featuring notable singles like “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” (with Flaco Jiménez), “Dance the Night Away,” and “Here Comes My Baby.” However, they took a ten-year hiatus before making a triumphant return in 2013 with the album In Time, followed by Mono in 2015, both of which re-established their presence in the top ten of the U.S. country charts.
Throughout their career, The Mavericks have charted 15 times on the American Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, with their highest-peaking single, “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” reaching number 13 in 1996. Internationally, their music has resonated as well, with “Dance the Night Away” becoming a hit in the United Kingdom in 1998. The band’s most commercially successful album, What a Crying Shame, has been certified platinum in the United States and double-platinum in Canada.
The Mavericks' unique sound is a fusion of diverse musical styles, including Tejano, Latin, Americana, and the pop music of the 1950s, heavily influenced by Raul Malo's distinctive vocal delivery. The band has been recognized with numerous accolades, including one Grammy Award, two Country Music Association awards, and three Academy of Country Music awards, underscoring their impact on the music industry.
Today, The Mavericks remain active in the music scene, performing and recording with a lineup that includes Raul Malo, Paul Deakin, Jerry Dale McFadden, and Eddie Perez. Their most recent album, Brand New Day, was released in 2017, continuing to showcase their rich musical heritage and dedication to their craft.
