The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, are an acclaimed American country band hailing from Dallas, Texas. Founded in 1989 by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer (née Erwin), the original lineup featured vocalist and guitarist Robin Lynn Macy as well as bassist Laura Lynch. The group started by performing bluegrass and country music at local venues and festivals, working tirelessly for six years to gain recognition before signing to Monument Records Nashville in 1995. It was then that Natalie Maines joined the group as the lead vocalist, replacing Lynch and setting the stage for their transformation into the globally recognized trio they are today.
The Chicks achieved significant commercial success with their 1998 debut album under Monument, Wide Open Spaces, which sold over twelve million copies and solidified their place in country music. The album featured hit singles such as "There's Your Trouble," "I Can Love You Better," and the title track, earning them widespread acclaim. Subsequent albums, Fly (1999) and Home (2002), continued their successful trajectory with hits like "Ready to Run," "Cowboy Take Me Away," and "Travelin' Soldier." Throughout this period, The Chicks collected numerous awards, including multiple Country Music Association (CMA) awards and Grammy Awards for Best Country Album.
In 2003, the group's trajectory took a dramatic turn when Natalie Maines made a controversial political statement during a performance, expressing her shame that President George W. Bush was from Texas. This remark sparked a fierce backlash, leading to boycotts from radio stations and significant challenges in their careers. While they faced vocal opposition from conservative circles, they continued to receive support from an artistic community that valued their right to free speech.
In response to the turmoil, The Chicks released Taking the Long Way in 2006, featuring the hit single "Not Ready to Make Nice," which directly addressed the backlash they faced. The song debuted at number one, achieving gold status within its first week despite limited radio play. Their resilience led to accolades, including five Grammy Awards the following year, cementing their legacy as champions of artistic expression. The documentary Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing provided further insight into their experiences, highlighting the struggles they overcame during this challenging period.
After a temporary hiatus following their comments about the President, The Chicks reunited for tours and recorded a new album in 2013, followed by a break until 2016 when they embarked on another series of tours. In 2020, the group made the decision to drop the word "Dixie" from their name due to its connotations, marking a new chapter in their history with the release of Gaslighter, their first album under Columbia Records in 14 years.
The Chicks have left an indelible mark on the country music landscape, charting multiple number-one hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts with songs like "Cowboy Take Me Away" and "Travelin' Soldier." They have garnered 13 Grammy Awards, 10 CMA Awards, and 8 Academy of Country Music Awards, reinforcing their status as one of the best-selling female bands of all time. As of 2020, with over 33 million certified albums sold and significant success in the U.S. market, The Chicks continue to be an influential force in music, blending traditional country with bold, modern themes.
