Kinky Friedman Biography
The county music performer and political personality known as Kinky Friedman was born Richard Samet Friedman in 1944 in Texas. Friedman grew up in Austin, Texas, graduating from high school and attending the University of Austin to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While still in school, Friedman began establishing a few bands, until ABC Records took notice of his talents and signed him to his first recording contract.
Kinky Friedman’s self-titled debut arrived one year later and set the stage for a music career which features an additional dozen albums. His most successful album, Sold American, featured a title track which rose into the country charts, but in recent years Friedman has become far more well-known for his politics, activism, and philanthropic endeavors.
An outspoken voice for such issues as the legalization of marijuana, education reform, and border security, Friedman ran unsuccessfully for Texas Governor in 2006. He also recently announced plans to run for Texas Agriculture Commissioner and has hinted at a second gubernatorial run sometime in the future.
In addition to politics and music, Kinky Friedman has appeared in the films Loose Shoes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and he has authored a number of detective novels and has served as a columnist for the Texas Monthly since 2001. Friedman also founded Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, which serves to save abused, aging, or neglected animals from euthanasia by providing them a safe haven to live out the rest of their lives.
