Born in 1961 in Flatwoods, Kentucky, Billy Ray Cyrus began singing at a young age, influenced by the gospel and bluegrass music in his community. He developed a strong appreciation for country music while still in elementary school. Although he initially attended Georgetown College on an athletic scholarship, Cyrus left before graduating and began performing in local bars and clubs, eventually moving to Los Angeles.
Cyrus's big break came when he signed with Mercury Records in the early 1990s. His debut album, Some Gave All, was released in 1992 and became a massive success, thanks to hits like "Achy Breaky Heart" and "Could've Been Me." The album shot to the top of the charts, making Billy Ray an instant sensation. It eventually went nine times platinum and clocked sales at over 20 million worldwide.
Following the success of his debut, Cyrus released a string of successful albums, including It Won't Be the Last, Storm in the Heartland, Trail of Tears, Shot Full of Love, Southern Rain, Time Flies, The Other Side, Wanna Be Your Joe, Home at Last, Back to Tennessee, and I'm American. These albums spawned numerous singles, such as "Somebody New," "Words by Heart," "Talk Some," and "Busy Man."
In addition to his music, Cyrus has also had a successful acting career, appearing in films like Radical Jack, Mulholland Drive, and The Spy Next Door, as well as television shows like Doc, Degrassi: The Next Generation, and Hannah Montana, where he starred alongside his daughter Miley. He has also worked as a producer, including on the Hannah Montana: The Movie film adaptation.
Cyrus has achieved significant success on the Billboard charts, with eight top-ten singles on the Hot Country Songs chart. His debut album, Some Gave All, remains his most successful to date, certified 9× multi-platinum in the United States and selling over 20 million copies worldwide. In 2019, he earned his first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 as a featured artist on a remix of Lil Nas X's song "Old Town Road," which spent a record-breaking 19 consecutive weeks at the top spot.
In recent years, Cyrus has continued to release new music, including the album Change My Mind in 2012. He has also made headlines for his collaborations, including his work with Lil Nas X on "Old Town Road," which won two Grammy Awards. Despite briefly considering a name change to simply "Cyrus" in 2017, Billy Ray has continued to perform and record under his full name.
