Ashley Monroe was born on September 10, 1986, in Knoxville, Tennessee. She began her music career at a young age, participating in various competitions before her teenage years. Following the passing of her father when she was thirteen, Monroe and her mother relocated to Nashville, where she aimed to pursue a full-time career in music. Initially, she found success as a songwriter before signing her first record deal, which led to work on her debut album.
Monroe's first record label released a few singles in anticipation of her debut album, but their underwhelming performance resulted in her being dropped from the label. Despite this setback, she had a complete album ready and continued writing songs for other artists, contributing to hits like “Flat on the Floor” (Katrina Elam, 2007), “Heart Like Mine” (Miranda Lambert, 2011), and “The Truth” (Jason Aldean, 2009). In 2009, Monroe self-released her album ""Satisfied"" through digital platforms, followed by a self-titled EP. This led to a new contract with Warner Bros. Nashville and the release of her critically acclaimed album ""Like a Rose"" in 2013.
In addition to her solo work, Monroe has collaborated with several well-known artists, including Trent Dabbs, The Raconteurs, and Train. She has also provided backing vocals for various artists, such as Will Hoge and Miranda Lambert. Notably, Monroe is a member of the female trio Pistol Annies, along with Miranda Lambert and Angaleena Presley. The group's song “Run Daddy Run” was featured in the soundtrack for the film ""The Hunger Games"" in 2012.
Monroe's debut album ""Satisfied"" was initially set for release in 2007 but was delayed, ultimately being released on May 19, 2009, under Sony Music. The album yielded two singles, "Satisfied" and "I Don't Want To," which reached number 43 and 37, respectively, on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Her follow-up album, ""Like a Rose"", was produced by Vince Gill and released on March 5, 2013. This album received widespread acclaim, with notable tracks including the title song and a collaboration with Blake Shelton. The next installment in her discography, ""The Blade"", was released on July 24, 2015, and earned Monroe a Grammy nomination for Best Country Album.
In February 2016, Monroe released a live album titled ""Live at Third Man Records"", featuring songs from her previous works, which was recorded live with no post-production editing allowed. After taking a brief hiatus to start a family, she announced her fourth studio album, ""Sparrow"", which was produced by Dave Cobb and released on April 20, 2018. This album incorporated string arrangements and drew inspiration from classic country pop influences.
