Arcade Fire is a Canadian indie rock band founded in 2001 in Montreal, Quebec, by husband and wife Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, along with friends Josh Deu, Tim Kyle, Alan Lavian, Dane Mills, and Brendan Reed. The group began working on their debut album in 2002, facing early challenges and tensions among members. Despite these difficulties, they caught the attention of Merge Records and successfully released their debut album, Funeral, in 2004.
Funeral received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, even earning the MTV2 Album of the Year status. The album included the single "Cold Wind," which was featured in the television series Six Feet Under, and garnered Arcade Fire a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Rock Album as well as recognition for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television, or Other Visual Media. This debut effort contributed to multiple Juno Awards and three Brit Award nominations, and the album ultimately sold over half a million copies worldwide.
Following the success of Funeral, Arcade Fire embarked on a tour from 2004 to 2005, performing at major music festivals such as Lollapalooza, Coachella, and the Reading and Leeds Festivals. This extensive touring helped to solidify their burgeoning reputation as a leading band in the indie rock scene.
The band returned to the studio after their tour to produce their second album, Neon Bible, which was released in 2007. This album featured singles such as "Black Mirror," "Keep the Car Running," and "Intervention." In 2009, their song "Wake Up" from Funeral gained additional prominence when it was featured in the film Where the Wild Things Are. Their third album, The Suburbs, released in 2010, further solidified their status, earning the 2011 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, among other accolades.
Subsequent albums include Reflektor (2013), which was accompanied by a film scored by the band, and Everything Now (2017), which prompted the Infinite Content Tour. The band's sixth studio album, We, was released in 2022.
Arcade Fire has received numerous accolades across their discography, with each of their studio albums nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammys. Their work has been recognized as significant in the 2000s music landscape, with Funeral regarded as one of the greatest albums of the decade. The band is known for their eclectic and layered sound, employing a wide array of instruments and showcasing a dynamic stage presence during performances.
