Angel Olsen, born Angelina Marie Carroll on January 22, 1987, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American singer-songwriter known for her distinct indie rock sound. Olsen spent her formative years in St. Louis, where she was adopted by a foster family that had cared for her since her birth. Her family's significant age difference influenced her perspective, leading her to be curious about their childhood experiences. This background would later inform her lyrical content and musical style.
Olsen’s interest in music began in her teenage years when she became more introverted and started attending local punk rock and noise music shows. She learned to play the piano and guitar and began writing her own songs. At 16, she joined a local band called Good Fight, which blended early pop influences with punk rock sensibilities. After graduating from Tower Grove Christian Academy, she moved to Chicago, where she further pursued her music career.
Before her breakthrough, Olsen garnered experience as a backup singer for notable artists, including Bonnie "Prince" Billy and The Cairo Gang. This collaboration would be instrumental in shaping her early career, as she honed her performance skills and gained exposure to the music industry.
Olsen's debut EP, Strange Cacti, was released in 2012, leading to a contract with Bathetic Records. Following this, she released her first full-length album, Half Way Home, which showcased her developing artistry. However, it was her 2014 album, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, that marked her full-band debut and received significant critical acclaim, establishing her as a rising star in indie rock.
In addition to her solo work, Olsen has collaborated with various musicians on indie projects. Notable collaborations include work with Marvin Tate, LeRoy Bach (of Wilco), and Tim Kinsella (of Cap’n Jazz). Her involvement can be heard on the album Tim Kinsella Sings the Songs of Marvin Tate, released in late 2013, which further demonstrates her versatility as an artist.
Olsen's discography has continued to grow, with six studio albums to her name as of now: Half Way Home (2012), Burn Your Fire for No Witness (2014), My Woman (2016), All Mirrors (2019), Whole New Mess (2020), and Big Time (2022). Each release has solidified her reputation for poignant songwriting and emotive vocal delivery.
Currently based in Asheville, North Carolina, Angel Olsen remains a significant figure in the indie music scene. Her journey from a small-town artist to a celebrated singer-songwriter underscores her dedication to her craft and her ability to evolve as an artist while remaining deeply connected to her roots.
