Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, by founding members Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. The band initially grew out of Staley's previous group, Alice N' Chains, before it was renamed to Alice in Chains following a collaboration with Cantrell. The lineup expanded with the addition of bassist Mike Starr and drummer Sean Kinney, and the band began recording demos, including their first significant work, "The Treehouse Tapes". A pivotal moment in their early career came when their demo caught the attention of Soundgarden's management, leading to a record deal with Columbia Records in 1989.
Before releasing their major label debut, Alice in Chains produced the EP "We Die Young", which featured the hit title track. The band's full-length debut album, "Facelift", was released in 1990. Initially met with moderate success, the album gained traction following the release of the single "Man in the Box," which saw heavy airplay on both radio and MTV, reaching the top twenty and earning a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance. This marked the beginning of Alice in Chains's rise to prominence within the grunge music scene.
Following "Facelift", Alice in Chains released a series of successful albums, including "Dirt" (1992) and "Alice in Chains" (1995), which featured numerous hit singles such as “Sea of Sorrow,” “Rooster,” “No Excuses,” and “Heaven Beside You.” During this prolific period, the band received nine Grammy nominations, solidifying their reputation as a leading force in the rock music genre.
Tragedy struck in 2002 with the death of Layne Staley, which put the band's future in doubt following an extended hiatus largely attributed to his struggles with addiction. In 2005, the remaining members reunited for a benefit concert, and in 2006, William DuVall was announced as Staley's replacement on vocals and rhythm guitar. Under this new lineup, the band released "Black Gives Way to Blue" in 2009, marking a successful comeback followed by "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" in 2013.
Alice in Chains has continued to perform and record, maintaining a lineup that includes DuVall, Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez, and drummer Sean Kinney. The band released their latest studio album, "Rainier Fog", in 2018, which debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. To promote the album, the band engaged with fans through various unique events, including performing at the Space Needle and organizing a scavenger hunt.
Since its formation, Alice in Chains has produced six studio albums, three EPs, and received multiple accolades, selling over 30 million records worldwide. Their influence on rock music is marked by their blend of heavy metal and grunge, particularly notable for their distinctive vocal harmonies between Cantrell and Staley, and later Cantrell and DuVall. In December 2020, the band was recognized with the Founders Award from Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture, reflecting their significant impact on the music scene and ongoing legacy.
