American Authors is an American rock band that originated in Boston and is now based in New York City. The band was formed in the mid-2010s by lead vocalist and guitarist Zac Barnett, bassist Dave Rublin, drummer Matt Sanchez, and former guitarist and banjoist James Adam Shelley. Initially known as The Blue Pages, the group met while attending Berklee College of Music in 2006. They spent their early years performing and recording music in Boston before relocating to Brooklyn, where they began to build their presence in the music scene.
The band gained significant attention with the release of their debut single, "Believer," which was well-received on alternative rock radio and later found additional exposure in commercials, including a prominent campaign for Lowe's. Their follow-up single, "Best Day of My Life," further solidified the band's popularity, appearing in various media, including the film "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and the television series "The Vampire Diaries." In January 2013, American Authors signed with Mercury Records and released their self-titled debut EP shortly thereafter.
Their debut studio album, "Oh, What a Life," was released on March 3, 2014, and featured hit singles like "Believer" and "Best Day of My Life." The album's commercial success allowed the band to gain recognition, eventually ranking in the top ten on Billboard’s chart of Top New Artists for that year. Throughout 2015, the band continued to build momentum with the release of their second album, "What We Live For," which included the lead single "Go Big or Go Home."
In 2018, American Authors announced their third studio album, "Seasons," which was released on February 1, 2019. The album featured several singles, including "Say Amen" and "Neighborhood," and showcased the band's evolving sound. The single "Deep Water" was released in May 2018 to precede the album's launch.
As of 2020, American Authors transitioned to independent music production, issuing a series of singles and an EP titled "Counting Down." In June 2021, the band announced a lineup change with the departure of James Adam Shelley. They continued to release music as a trio, collaborating with notable artists like Rob Thomas and Santana.
In September 2022, the group released "Blind for Love," the lead single from their fourth studio album, "Best Night of My Life," which debuted on February 10, 2023. This new album introduced several singles, including "Best Night of My Life" and "We Happy." Following the album's release, American Authors continued to explore new music and collaborations, including standalone singles and holiday-themed releases.
Looking ahead, the band announced their fifth studio album, "Call Your Mother," scheduled for release on October 18, 2024. The lead single, "My Last Dime," was launched in March 2024, followed by additional singles in the months leading up to the album's release. American Authors continues to evolve, maintaining a strong presence in the modern rock landscape while engaging with fans through a variety of musical endeavors.
