Steven Wright Biography

Steven Wright is a comedian noted for his deadpan delivery. Steven Wright has built up a fan following over the years. Wright's initial fame came as he received an Academy Award for his 1988 short, "The Appointments of Dennis Jennings."

Steven Wright co-produced, co-wrote and co-starred in the film, playing a man who goes to a psychotherapist and meets with unexpected results. During the late 1970s, Wright began performing in Boston comedy clubs, and, by 1982, he had made his first appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."

Steven Wright went on to make nine appearances over the next three years. In 1985, HBO took notice of this rising star and gave Wright his first chance to headline a television special with "On Location: Steven Wright." In the next year, Wright appeared on the first "Comic Relief" special and has performed a routine on each one since. During the 1980s he also guest hosted "Saturday Night Live," guest starred on "The Smothers Brothers Thanksgiving Special" and even appeared on 1989's "The Prince's Trust Gala," an affair of the royals in the UK.

Steven Wright continues to support his fellow comedians, appearing in 1993 as Warren, a recurring role on Paul Reiser's "Mad About You." Steven Wright also made a memorable guest appearance on HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" in 1992. Wright made his film. debut in1985's "Desperately Seeking Susan," then appeared in the ensemble cast of 1988's "Stars and Bars."

Steven Wright also was the voice of the DJ in 1992's "Reservoir Dogs," before playing the unskilled pilot in 1993's "So I Married An Axe Murderer." In 1994, Wright was featured in a number of films, including "Natural Born Killers," "Mixed Nuts" and "The Swan Princess." On occasion, Wright has written for film and television, notably Jim Jarmusch's "Coffee and Cigarettes," in which Steven Wright also appeared, and for his own HBO special, "Wicker Chairs and Gravity," in 1990.

Steven Wright named Top 50 funny man. In a 2005 poll in The Comedian's Comedian, Steven Wright was voted amongst the top 50 comedy acts ever by fellow comedians and comedy insiders.
