Gilbert Gottfried Biography

Gilbert Gottfried was born in 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. By the time he was in his mid-teens, Gottfried was already performing stand-up in clubs around the New York City area, and soon found himself snatched up by Saturday Night Live for their new season launching in 1980. Although he didn’t remain with the cast for subsequent seasons, Gilbert used SNL as a launching pad for an impressive career in other arenas of television and film.

Gilbert appeared in a number of films in the 1980’s, including Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Hot to Trot (1988), and he also became a frequent guest on the Hollywood Squares show in the 1990’s. Throughout the decade Godfried’s voice could be heard in a number of animated shows, including Superman: The Animated Series and Superboy. His stand-up became a frequent addition to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and was also featured frequently on Comedy Central. Around the same time, he appeared in The Return of Jafar as the voice of Iago the Parrot (1994) and continued the same role with the television series, and he appeared in In the House (1996), Hercules (1998), Dr. Dolittle (1998), and Timon & Pumbaa (1997.)

In the new millennium, Gilbert Godfried has appeared in a number of films and television shows, including: CSI (2003), Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), Back by Midnight (2002), Meet Wally Sparks (2002), Farce of the Penguins (2007), Family Guy (2007), Hannah Montana (2008), Jack and the Beanstalk (2010), Stripperland (2010), Law & Order (2011), and Roseanne Barr’s Comedy Central Roast (2012.)

Most recently, Gilbert Godfried rea from Fifty Shades of Grey for a web video in 2012, lending his trademark voice to provide humor to the book’s salacious sexual descriptions.
