Chris Rock now ranks in the Pantheon of comedy giants, but it was a long road to there. Chris Rock is a stand-up comedian who first rose to national stardom when he appeared on Saturday Night Live in the late '80s and early '90s. Despite this, his skits remained popular only to fringe viewers and Rock struggled to find his audience.
Chris Rock spent much of his childhood in Brooklyn's notoriously tough Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, as portrayed on the current hit show Everybody Hates Chris.
Chris Rock was discovered by Eddie Murphy at a New York comedy club in 1986 and he made his first big screen appearance in Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop II, a year later. In 1988, Rock also starred in Keenan Ivory Wayans' I'm Gonna Get You Sucka.
Chris Rock followed the footsteps of his idol, Eddie Murphy, by joining the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1990. A year later, he released his first comedy album, Born Suspect. Then he made one of his most famous big screen appearances to date - as Pookie, a drug addicted crack-head, in New Jack City in 1991.
Despite all the small and big screen action he was getting, Chris Rock still hadn't become a household name. that all changed in 1996 when HBO produced and aired Bring in the Pain. Chris Rock won two Emmy Awards and wide critical acclaim for the show.
The following year, HBO gave Rock his own on show, The Chris Rock Show, which earned him two CableACE awards. During this high point in his career, Rock also appeared in Sgt. Bilko (1996), Beverly Hills Ninja (1997), and Lethal Weapon 4 (1998). Recent films include Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Bad Company (2002) costarring Anthony Hopkins, and the voice of Marty in DreamWorks' Madagascar (2005).
Rock also received two Grammy Awards for his spoken comedy albums Roll With the New (1997) and Bigger and Blacker (1999). In 2005, Rock debuted a sitcom on The CW Television Network called Everybody Hates Chris, which was inspired by Rock's teenage years growing up in Bed-Stuy. The show quickly became the second most watched comedy on the network.
In early 2005, Chris Rock hosted the 77th Academy Awards ceremony.
