Graham William Nash OBE, born on February 2, 1942, in Lancashire, England, is a celebrated English-American musician, singer, and songwriter known for his distinctive light tenor voice and profound contributions to music. Raised in Salford, Nash displayed an early passion for music, experimenting with various pop groups during his teenage years. His career took a significant turn in 1960 when he co-founded The Hollies, which quickly rose to fame in the UK music scene. Nash's entrepreneurial spirit also shone through as he launched his own music publishing company just five years later.
Nash remained with The Hollies for nearly a decade, enjoying considerable success, until a fateful meeting in 1968 introduced him to Stephen Stills and David Crosby. This encounter, while touring with The Hollies in the United States, would be pivotal in the formation of the legendary supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. As a key member of CSNY, Nash showcased his songwriting talents, contributing timeless classics such as “Teach Your Children” and “Our House,” which resonated with audiences and solidified the group's status as one of the most cherished musical acts of the era.
Throughout his tenure with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Nash became increasingly involved in political activism, advocating for various causes through his music. His songs “Immigration Man” and “Military Madness” reflect his commitment to political and social issues. Even in recent years, Nash has remained a vocal advocate, performing as a duo with Crosby and participating in events like the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011, underscoring his dedication to environmental conservation, human rights, and anti-nuclear causes.
In addition to his musical prowess, Graham Nash has made a name for himself as a talented photographer. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, his photographic works were showcased internationally, culminating in a remarkable auction of over two thousand prints at Sotheby’s in the early 1990s. This auction set a record for the highest grossing sale of a single private collection of photography, further highlighting Nash’s artistic versatility beyond music.
Nash’s contributions to music have not gone unrecognized. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1997 and The Hollies in 2010. In 2010, he received the prestigious title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music and charity, along with four honorary doctorates from esteemed institutions, including the University of Salford.
In 2018, Rhino Records released Over The Years, a two-disk box set featuring a wealth of Nash's demos spanning from 1968 to 1980, offering fans a treasure trove of his creative process and highlighting some of his most iconic works. This compilation underscores Nash's enduring legacy within the music industry, showcasing not only his evolution as an artist but also his unwavering commitment to his craft.
As of 2025, Nash is set to perform again alongside Stephen Stills, backed by Dawes, at the Fire Aid benefit concert in Los Angeles, marking their first collaboration since 2016. This reunion highlights Nash's temporary but poignant return to the stage, embodying his ongoing impact on music and culture. Through his work, Graham Nash continues to be a significant influence, inspiring new generations of musicians while championing the causes he believes in.
