10,000 Maniacs is an American alternative rock band founded in the early 1980s. The group was initially formed as Still Life by founding members Teri Newhouse, Robert Buck, Chet Cardinale, Steven Gustafson, and Dennis Drew. Their early sound included contributions from vocalist Natalie Merchant, whose distinctive voice quickly positioned her as the frontwoman for the band. Following a series of lineup changes, the group adopted the name 10,000 Maniacs just before Labor Day in September 1981, marking their first performance under this new identity during the holiday weekend.
In 1982, 10,000 Maniacs recorded their first release, an EP titled Human Conflict Number Five. Despite limited commercial success, the EP allowed them to capture the attention of Elektra Records, leading to their signing in 1984. The band's debut full-length album, The Wishing Chair, was released soon after and achieved silver status in the UK, although it did not secure the significant breakthrough they were seeking in North America.
The breakthrough for 10,000 Maniacs came with the critically acclaimed albums In My Tribe (1987) and Blind Man’s Zoo (1989). In My Tribe yielded the band's first top ten single, "What’s the Matter Here?", while Blind Man’s Zoo generated several notable tracks, including "Trouble Me" and "Eat for Two," and achieved platinum status in the United States. Their continued success in the early 1990s included hits like "These Are Days," "Candy Everybody Wants," "Everyday is Like Sunday," and "Because the Night," from their albums Our Time in Eden and the EP Candy Everybody Wants.
In 1992, after an influential performance on MTV Unplugged, Natalie Merchant departed the band to pursue a solo career. Following her departure, the remaining members of 10,000 Maniacs continued to perform and record, with various lineup changes over the years. The current lineup features Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson, Jerry Augustyniak, Jeff Erickson, and Mary Ramsey as the lead vocalist.
In July 2023, 10,000 Maniacs announced that Mary Ramsey and Jeff Erickson would be leaving the band to pursue other interests, with Leigh Nash joining as the new lead singer and Matt Slocum as the new guitarist. However, in January 2024, they informed fans via Facebook that Nash and Slocum had exited to devote time to their previous band, Sixpence None the Richer. Mary Ramsey subsequently returned as lead vocalist, and guitarist Joe Rozler was introduced into the group.
As of April 2024, the band announced that Illinois-based musician Ben Medina would be joining 10,000 Maniacs as lead guitarist. The band's history reflects a commitment to evolving its sound while maintaining a core identity, as they have continued to perform and release music, including their recent projects Music from the Motion Picture (2013), Twice Told Tales (2015), and the EP For Crying Out Loud (2016). They have released a total of nine studio albums, six EPs, and five live albums throughout their career, solidifying their place in the alternative rock genre.
