Jill Scott, Philly girl. Jill Scott was born and raised in North Philadelphia and began her performing career writing and reading poetry. She was discovered by Amir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots. Questlove invited her to join the band in the studios. The collaboration resulted in the song "You Got Me". She currently resides in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, a New Jersey suburb.
Jill Scott subsequently collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common and broadened her performing experience by touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical Rent. Signed to Steve McKeever's newly formed Hidden Beach Recordings label, she released her debut album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 in July 2000. The following summer she released Experience:Jil Scott 826+ after she released the single "A Long Walk." Scott continued to gain more recognition, eventually earning a Grammy nomination in early 2003 for Best Female Vocal Performance for "A Long Walk", Jill Scott won a Grammy award at the 2005 Grammy awards for Best R&B Solo Vocal Performance, Male or Female.
Jill Scott released a new album, entitled Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 in 2004. Her book of poetry, The Moments, The Minutes, The Hours was released in April
Jill Scott took an extended break from recording music during which she got married and established the Blues Babe Foundation, a program founded to help young minority students pay for university expenses. The Blues Babe Foundation intends to financially support students between the ages of sixteen to twenty-one. It plans to specifically target students residing in Philadelphia, Camden, and the greater Delaware Valley.
Jill Scott donated $100,000 to help start the foundation. The foundation was named after Jill Scott's grandmother because of the bluish tint in her brown complexion. Jill Scott had once attended Temple University while working two jobs. She had to drop out after her junior year when she ran out of money. Scott said that she wantedto finish school, and the foundation will give money to students who are working and who are facing the impossible and wanting to achieve their dreams.
Jill Scott is still waiting for her monumental breakout, and if the critics are correct, that should be her next album.
Jill Scott has a very rare facility to hit notes in the sixth and seventh octave, as displayed on songs such as 'Gimmie' where she hits a D6, and on 'Spring Summer Feeling' where she hits a C7 note with full vibrato.
