Kenneth Brian Edmonds, known professionally as Babyface, is an accomplished American singer, songwriter, and record producer, born on April 10, 1959, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Raised in a musical family as the fifth of six brothers, he developed a passion for music from a young age, writing songs to express his emotions. Despite a shy demeanor, Babyface honed his talents during his school years at North Central High School. After facing the loss of his father to lung cancer when he was in eighth grade, he found solace in music and performance, which shaped his future career.
Babyface’s early foray into music began as a performer with the band Manchild and later with The Deele, where he contributed as a guitarist and songwriter. His first significant songwriting credit came in 1983 with the track "Slow Jam" for Midnight Star. He gained further recognition after adopting the stage name "Babyface," given to him by funk musician Bootsy Collins, due to his youthful appearance. In 1986, Babyface released his debut solo album, "Lovers", although it saw limited success.
The pivotal moment in Babyface's career came with his second album, "Tender Lover", released in 1989. This album featured hit singles such as "It’s No Crime" and "Whip Appeal," achieving double platinum status and marking Babyface's transition from performer to a sought-after hit writer and producer. Following the success of "Tender Lover", Babyface collaborated with major artists such as Whitney Houston, Johnny Gill, and Boyz II Men, writing record-breaking hits including "End of the Road." In 1989, he co-founded LaFace Records, which played a vital role in launching the careers of iconic artists like Toni Braxton, TLC, and Usher.
Over his career, Babyface has contributed to more than 26 number-one R&B hits and has received 13 Grammy Awards, acknowledging his exceptional songwriting and production skills. His extensive list of collaborators includes renowned musicians such as Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, and Mariah Carey. He has produced timeless hits such as "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" and co-wrote "Change the World" with Eric Clapton.
In addition to his music career, Babyface has expanded his creativity into film and television, founding Edmonds Entertainment Group. He has produced several notable projects, including the film "Soul Food" and the animated film "Josie and the Pussycats". Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to release a range of solo albums, including "For the Cool in You" (1993), "The Day" (1996), and "Playlist" (2007).
Most recently, Babyface released a Grammy-winning duet album with Toni Braxton, titled "Love, Marriage & Divorce", in 2014. In April 2024, he announced a Las Vegas residency, showcasing his enduring appeal and commitment to live performance. Babyface's legacy as a prolific songwriter and producer continues to influence contemporary music, solidifying his status as one of the industry's greats.
