Isabel Buarque de Hollanda Gilberto de Oliveira, known as Bebel Gilberto, was born on May 12, 1966, in New York City to two renowned Brazilian musicians: bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. Throughout her early childhood, she traveled extensively with her parents as they performed and recorded music globally. Gilberto moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of five, and after her parents' separation when she was seven, she divided her time between Brazil and New York. This nomadic upbringing, rich in musical influence, fostered her passion for a career in music.
Gilberto began her musical journey in earnest in the mid-1980s. Her debut solo project came in 1986 with the self-titled EP "Bebel Gilberto," which included the notable song "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo." Over the next few years, she collaborated with significant Brazilian artists, including Cazuza, contributing to several memorable songs. Moving to Manhattan in 1991, she remained connected to both the U.S. and Brazilian music scenes.
In the year 2000, Gilberto released "Tanto Tempo," an electronic bossa nova album that gained international acclaim and positioned her as one of the best-selling Brazilian artists in the United States since the 1960s. She followed up with her second album, "Bebel Gilberto," in 2004, which showcased her acoustic lounge style. Her third album, "Momento," released in 2007, further refined her sound by blending Brazilian influences with New York's eclectic music scene, solidifying her status as a global artist.
Gilberto's fourth studio album, "All in One," was released in 2009 and marked a return to organic musical styles, produced by a diverse team of collaborators. In addition to her work in music, Gilberto provided the voice for the character Eva in the animated film "Rio" (2011), which contributed to her visibility in popular culture.
Her music has been featured in several prominent films and television series, including "Eat Pray Love," "Six Feet Under," and "Sex and the City," further establishing her as a multifaceted artist. Over her career, Bebel Gilberto has sold more than 2.5 million records and continues to tour and create new music.
In 2011, she contributed to the charitable album "Red Hot+Rio 2," which aimed to raise awareness for AIDS and related health issues. Her song "Tudo" was nominated for Best Brazilian Song at the 16th Latin Grammy Awards in 2015, further cementing her reputation within the music industry. As of 2025, Bebel Gilberto remains a vital figure in contemporary music, celebrated for her innovative approach to bossa nova and her enduring influence on the genre.
