Barbara Ann "Bobbi" Humphrey is an American jazz flautist and singer born on April 25, 1950, in Marlin, Texas. She grew up in Dallas and began studying classical and jazz flute in high school. Humphrey continued her education at Texas Southern University and Southern Methodist University, where she was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie at a talent contest. Gillespie encouraged her to pursue a music career in New York City.
In 1971, Humphrey moved to New York and was signed by George Butler to Blue Note, becoming the first female instrumentalist to join the label. She began playing regularly throughout the city, including performances at the Apollo Theater and with notable musicians such as Herbie Mann and Lee Morgan. Humphrey's debut album, Flute-In, was released in 1971 and featured contributions from Morgan.
Humphrey's subsequent albums, including Dig This! (1972) and Blacks and Blues (1973), showcased her unique blend of jazz, funk, and soul. The latter album, recorded with the Mizell Brothers, was a commercial success and peaked at number 84 on the Billboard 200 chart. Humphrey continued to release albums throughout the 1970s, including Satin Doll (1974), Fancy Dancer (1975), and Tailor Made (1977).
In addition to her work with Blue Note, Humphrey has performed with renowned musicians such as Duke Ellington and George Benson. She has also played at prestigious venues, including the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Humphrey's music has been sampled by various artists, including Eric B. & Rakim, Grand Puba, and Ludacris.
In the 1990s, Humphrey established her own record label, Paradise Sounds Records, and released the album Passion Flute in 1994. She has continued to perform and record music, citing influences such as Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann, and James Moody. Humphrey was named Best Female Instrumentalist by Billboard magazine in 1976 and has remained a respected figure in the jazz community.
Throughout her career, Humphrey has released twelve albums and has worked with a range of talented musicians. Her contributions to the music industry extend beyond her own performances, as she has also been involved in the business side of the industry, incorporating Innovative Artist Management and The Bobbi Humphrey Music Company. Humphrey's legacy as a pioneering jazz flautist continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans.
