Billy Cobham, a renowned Panamanian-American jazz drummer, was born on May 16, 1944, in Col?n, Panama. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was three years old, and he began playing drums at the age of four. Cobham's early life was marked by a strong musical influence, with his father, Manuel, working as a hospital statistician during the week and playing piano on weekends.
Cobham's musical education began at the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he was accepted at the age of 15. He started playing drums professionally after graduating, and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. During his time in the Army, Cobham played with a U.S. Army band for three years. After his discharge, he joined Horace Silver's quintet and became a house drummer for Atlantic Records, as well as a session musician for CTI and Kudu.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Cobham gained prominence as a drummer, working with notable musicians such as Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. His collaboration with Miles Davis on albums like "A Tribute to Jack Johnson" and "Big Fun" helped establish him as a leading figure in jazz fusion. Cobham's work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which he co-founded with guitarist John McLaughlin, further solidified his reputation as a master drummer.
Cobham's debut album, "Spectrum," released in 1973, was a surprise hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard magazine Jazz Albums chart and No. 26 on the Top 200 Albums chart. He continued to experiment with different drum equipment and techniques, releasing a string of influential albums throughout the 1970s, including "Crosswinds" and " Total Eclipse." Cobham's dynamic style and expansive drum kit, which featured multiple bass drums, snares, and cymbals, influenced a generation of drummers.
In addition to his work as a solo artist, Cobham has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Jack Bruce, the Grateful Dead, and Bobby and the Midnites. He has also formed his own band, Billy Cobham's Glass Menagerie, and has released several albums with the group. Cobham has been recognized for his contributions to music, including inductions into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame.
Cobham has continued to perform and record music throughout his career, releasing albums such as "Drum 'n' Voice 2" and "Drum'n' Voice 3," which feature a range of guest musicians. He has also taught drums online at the Billy Cobham School of Drums, part of the ArtistWorks Drum Academy, since 2011.
