Karen Valencia Clark Sheard, born on November 15, 1960, is a prominent American gospel singer and songwriter known for her powerful voice and significant contributions to the genre. Growing up in a musically rich household, Karen was influenced by her father, who directed the local church’s gospel choir. This environment fostered her love for music from an early age and laid the foundation for her and her siblings' future careers, leading them to form the renowned family group, the Clark Sisters, in 1973.

Karen's journey in music began as a key member of the Clark Sisters, where she showcased her incredible vocal talents alongside her siblings. Their collaborative efforts led to the release of 17 albums, but it was during a hiatus from the group that Karen ventured into a solo career. In 1997, she released her debut studio album, Finally Karen, which featured the hit single "Balm in Gilead," a re-recording from the Clark Sisters' earlier discography. The album quickly became one of the highest-selling gospel albums of the year and earned her a Grammy nomination as well as a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for "Best Female Vocalist."

After signing with Island Records, Karen’s solo career continued to flourish. Finally Karen topped the Billboard charts for gospel albums and even reached the top forty on mainstream charts, earning her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. She later switched to Elektra Records, releasing several critically acclaimed albums, including 2nd Chance (2002), inspired by her near-fatal experience following a medical procedure that left her with a 2% chance of survival. This powerful moment in her life resonated through her music and is reflected in her work.
